Dear                    ,

ATISN 16160 - Llangollen Bridge

Thank you for your request for information which I received on 11 March 2022.  You asked:

Denbighshire County Council are carrying out works on the bridge in Llangollen which I understand is an Ancient Monument and listed as one of the seven wonders of Wales.  Yesterday the contractor employed by Denbighshire CC damaged the stone structure of the bridge whilst digging up a lamp standard with a JCB. Please confirm:

(a) Whether Denbighshire CC or the contractor sought permission to survey the bridge prior to carrying out any proposed works;

(b) Whether Denbighshire CC or their contractor were granted permission to carry out works on the ancient monument subject to appropriate conditions laid down by Cadw; and

(c) If permissions were granted under (a) or (b) what terms and conditions were imposed under those permission duly granted.

Our response

I have answered you questions in order below;

The proposals involved no work to the masonry of the bridge and as such, no pre-works survey was required. Cadw imposed conditions on the consent to mitigate the impacts of below ground interventions through the implementation of a programme of archaeological monitoring by an appropriately qualified archaeologist throughout the work.

Scheduled monument consent was approved by Cadw on 27 July 2021 to widen and repave footways, modify the existing highway drainage, undertake highway resurfacing works and lighting column / lantern replacements; and

I have attached a copy of the scheduled monument consent.
