Purpose built laboratories “hotbed for innovation”

The Minister for Health and Social Services, Lesley Griffiths has officially opened new state of the art laboratories designed to keep the Welsh NHS in pace with technology.
Monday 23 April 2012
The Minister visited the NHS Wales Health Informatics Research Laboratories, which have moved into purpose built accommodation in the Institute of Life Sciences in Swansea University on Monday April 23.

The research laboratories are designed to form an ‘NHS in a lab’ - a safe and accessible research facility to study the patients’ journey experience and how it can be improved through the use of technology..

The labs place Wales at the forefront of ehealth and identify ways to improve services for patients.

Within the labs there are a number of settings that represent a patient’s home, a GP surgery, a hospital ward, an out of hours service and a pharmacy.
These are used to represent places where patients receive care and where new technologies for use in health can be tested for safety, usability and inter-operability.

  • The Labs bring together healthcare staff, researchers and companies to find innovations in healthcare, and
  • Make the most of existing knowledge with the University and NHS Wales to develop the ehealth economy
  • Provide opportunities for Welsh companies to develop their skills and products
  • Enable innovations to be shared by health services in the UK and globally
Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths said:

“The labs have a multifunctional role. They test new technologies for NHS Wales and act as a hotbed for innovation, creating successful collaborations with local and national industry, and building a robust eHealth economy.”

“Thanks to the Informing Healthcare Programme and the support it has received from the Labs, we have begun to change the landscape of healthcare technology and make it easier for our doctors and nurses to provide the best care to patients.

“This demonstrates how great successes can be achieved when health, academia, industry and government work together.”
